Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, based on Prosper Mérimée's 1845 novella and first premiered in Paris in 1875, tells the story of Carmen, a fatal anti-heroine gypsy who dies for freedom and love.
Antonio Pirolli, an Italian conductor and former Musical Director of opera houses in Ankara and Istanbul, serves as musical director. Francisco López directs the staging, and Leonor Leal Chamorro, a flamenco dancer from Jerez de la Frontera, is choreographer and bailaora.
The Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa perform the opera in French, with Portuguese subtitles, in CCB's Main Auditorium. A pre-concert talk by Bárbara Villalobos takes place 30 minutes before the performance.
The performance begins at 8pm. Tickets are €45–75.
